Katie's 1st day of preschool

Nothing quite says I'm ready for school like this big smile. I don't know how she got so silly with two very reserved and serious parents. She loves preschool. She woke up in the morning and said, "take me to school right now". She had to wait a couple of hours but it was worth it.

Happy Birthday Tommy

Here is Tommy on his first day of school. He is in 1st grade now!

Tommy lost his 6th tooth on his 7th birthday. His teacher let him celebrate his birthday during class and I was able to go. He stood in front of the class while his friends asked him questions like, what is your favorite game, color, etc. Then they each said something they like about him. It was so cute. One little girl said, "I like you because you play gentle, not rough". Mind you, this was not his sister who made that comment. One of my favorites was the little boy who said, "I like you because you're smart...like me". I always knew how wonderful and sweet my boy is, it was very cool to see that others notice it too. We were going to take Tommy to Mr. Biggs and play lazer tag but Grandma and Aunt Kathy sent him a Nintendo DS so he wasn't interested in leaving the house. After our crazy week, I was happy to stay home too. Tommy started riding his bike without training wheels a couple of days before his birthday.

Happy Birthday Katie

I can't believe my baby is five years old! She acts 13 so I guess I shouldn't be all that surprised. But seriously, what happened to my little baby? Since we did a party last year, we told the kids they could each pick a place to go for their birthday but we weren't doing a party. They were a little disappointed but they ended up getting a day all to themselves that they don't normally get when we do the combo party. Katie's birthday was Monday. She picked Chuck E. Cheeses. It was just the four of us and we had a great time. She will start preschool this week. Here are some things she can already do:

She can hula hoop, swing by herself, skip, and ride her new scooter. She can also use big words and make us shoot milk out of our noses. Like the other night at the dinner table when she said, "Mommy, what's a pagina?"

No there is too much. Let me sum up.

I haven't blogged in a very long time. Mike went to Vandenberg AFB, CA for Air Force training for six weeks this summer. I thought this would be a good time for me to go on full time orders and start my master's degree. It was quite a busy summer but I think it really did make the separation easier. I had a gal from church come and watch the kids each day. I am still working full time but Mike is back now. I got an A- on my first class. I was pretty nervous since I haven't been a student in 13 years. I was afraid the only reference material I could come up with would be Nickelodeon or Disney. I go back to working part time the first of October. It seems like the kids are growing so quickly. I look forward to being home with them more.

My mom has finished her radiation treatments and is starting to get her energy back. She just got back from a trip to Washington with her friend where she went out on her boat and caught 8 salmon!

Mike was able to visit his friend Blake while he was in California. It is such a miracle he is still with us and he seems to be doing really well.

Even though we were really busy all summer, we still had some fun.
I dropped the kids off in Salt Lake one weekend so I could work. This was at the end of Mike's training and he drove them home. Here they are getting ready to fly to Salt Lake.

These are s'mores I invented. Little cinnamon gram cracker pretzels with marshmallows and chocolate chips. Broil for just a couple of minutes and the marshmallows toast perfectly. mmmm.

Mike was also able to go to my squadron's family day. Here is Katie in a Huey. My kids really do have fun at all of these places we drag them. I just can't capture their joy.

Speaking of the dog, he disappeared for two days. We finally found him when I saw this picture on the Humane Society website. The folks that had taken him there also called Mike that day when they saw the flyers we posted all over the neighborhood. Mike went and saved him. He questions that decision daily.

Tommy & Katie funny quotes

Katie is getting ready to baptized so it comes up in conversation a lot. Like when I said, "Isn't it neat that you will be washed clean and all your mistakes gone, like a fresh new start?" and she said, "And we'll have to change our names and move to Alabama?" I missed that lesson. Or the time she was cheating at a game we were playing and I said, "you shouldn't cheat, you're about to be baptized" and she said, "I know, I need to get it all out because it's almost the end of the road".

Tommy patted my belly and asked, "how long did you say it takes this to go away?" I was like, what? "You're tummy...after you have a baby" I told him a minimum of 8 years.

I was sharing some popcorn with the kids while I was driving. We were passing the bag back and forth. One of my turns was too long I guess and the kids were shouting for me to pass it back. When I finally did Tommy said, "Surprisingly she didn't eat that much".

As I was getting Katie ready for school after a long weekend, I found some homework in her backpack that we didn't do. She said, "In three days we couldn't do the homework!"

My nephews told Tommy that my laptop was really nice. He said, "Ya, my Dad's laptop is like Wall-E and my mom's is like Eva".

Some of the kids in Tommy's class are expressing their doubts about Santa. Tommy told me there was even a boy in 5th grade who didn't believe. Tommy said, "He's in 5th grade! He should be smart enough to know there is a Santa".

Tommy whispered something to me as we were taking Katie to school. I knew he was going to suggest something fun for us to do without Katie so I told him to wait and tell me in a minute. Then Katie was very curious so she said, "tell me Tommy. I can take it, I give you my word."

When I told Katie to stop swinging on the mantle, she said, "Do you want me to save the world or not?"

I was watching a cartoon with Tommy. I told him it was weird that one of the characters was not getting along with his friend. Tommy said,"well mom you have to know there is a back story".

Katie to Tommy, "Kiss me on the cheek Tommy. That's the only way I will forgive you for kicking me in the throat." This particular element of my blog may come to an end if the quotes continue to be this disturbing.

We were eating at KFC. Katie wanted to take home the balloon tied to her chair. I told her she could if she stopped playing with it and finished eating. She said, "then I can play with the balloon in the car?" I said, "yes" she said, "and marry it?" and I said, "yes, you can marry it" she said, "but we just met".

While Katie and I were doing the dishes, she had a couple of good ones. I was putting chili in the garbage disposal and she said, "eww, that stinks". Then I pushed it down with my hand and she said, "eww mom, I can't believe your doing that, it's so gross". Wait until she has kids, she'll realize nothing is gross anymore. Then I was scrubbing a dish. Grabbing the spray hose she said, "Allow me".

Tommy was correcting Katie on her ABCs because instead of saying LMNOP she says elmo elmo P. It hurt her feelings so I was explaining to him that we need to encourage each other. He finally conceded and said, "You win this round mommy".

Tommy was trying to get Mike to play his transformers video game with him: You don't practice that's why you're not good at it. I want you to practice.

Tommy and I were watching a dinosaur special on the Discovery channel. They were giving details about how certain dinosaurs lived. I asked Tommy, "How do they know that?" Tommy said: Uh...they're scientists...they're smart.

Tommy telling how Katie had hurt him while they were wrestling: She damaged me a lot.

Me to Tommy while he was chasing Katie around the jewelry stands in Santa Fe: Tommy stop it!
Man selling jewelry: She started it.
So Tommy had a witness.

Me: Katie, go downstairs and finish your lunch.
Katie: But I'm scared.
Me: Tommy is going with you, you'll be fine.
Katie: But we don't have any weapons.
Me: ??? Just hurry up and go eat.
Katie: But I'll fall if I go downstairs too fast.
Me: Just hurry and eat so we can go to the park.
Katie: But I will choke if I eat too fast.
